In Defense of Hobbies: The Whimsical Joy of Doing Things Just Because

Posted by Carson Coffey on

There’s something magical about having a hobby. Not a side hustle. Not a productivity tool. Just something that’s yours: a little corner of your day dedicated to joy, play, curiosity, or calm.

As kids, we were overflowing with hobbies: drawing, rollerblading, collecting things, pretending to be detectives. But somewhere along the line, a lot of us got the message that hobbies had to “mean something” to count. We’re here to say they don’t. They just have to make you happy.

Here’s your permission slip to chase hobbies that add a little whimsy to your life. No ROI required.

Get Moving (But Keep It Playful)

You don’t have to join a gym or sign up for a half-marathon to enjoy being active. Maybe it’s just a weekly pickleball match with friends in the park, or stretching on your living room floor while your cat watches suspiciously.

The key? Keep it light. Wear fun sneakers. Use cute equipment. Laugh when you miss. Hobbies don’t have to be serious to be meaningful.

Make Journaling a Ritual, Not a Resolution

Journaling isn’t just for processing emotions or tracking goals. It can also be a sweet, slow ritual at the end of the day. Light a candle. Pour some tea. Curl up with one of our leatherette journals and write down your favorite moment from the day, the weird dream you had, or a single quote from the book you’re reading.

You don’t need a system; just a page, a pen, and a little quiet.

Slow Evenings with Cards and Tea

There’s something delightfully old-fashioned about shuffling a deck of cards and settling in for a few slow rounds of a game. You can play solo (yes, solitaire counts) or make it part of your evening wind-down with a friend or partner.

Pair it with a mug of hot tea and one of our book-themed playing card decks and you’ve created a whole vibe. A cozy, quiet kind of fun that feels like its own little era.

Try It Because You Want To

Paint a flower poorly. Learn three chords on the ukulele. Bake something with too much cinnamon. Start a puzzle you might not finish. You don’t need to be great at a hobby to enjoy it; you just need to give yourself permission to be bad at it and do it anyway.

In a world that pushes productivity and “having a brand,” having a hobby is a gentle act of rebellion. It’s also a love letter to your inner child, who just wanted to do things because they were fun.
